John Wetten Brown has travelled the length and breadth of this country capturing on canvas its varied and unique landscapes. All manner of subjects are depicted in his unique style, from the fishing villages of the East Neuk ( corner ) of Fife like Pittenweem and Crail with their iconic crow step gables and narrow wynds ( alleyways ), to the vast sweeps of moorland and mountain; churning skies looming over fields of black faced sheep and hairy Highland Cows.
Also prominent in his work are the busy back lanes of the West End of Glasgow ( where the artist lives and works ) and Edinburgh’s Old Town and New Town. You will also find paintings of historic towns and villages such as Inveraray, Portree and Portsoy; the delightful port of Stromness in Orkney and the stunning historic fishing village of Crovie in Sutherland. Here too are portraits of islands of the Inner Hebrides like Coll and Tiree and the wild and beautiful islands of Skye, Mull and Islay.
His style is bright, colourful and perspectively challenged : squinty is an apt description of this individual style . His first solo exhibition in a well known gallery in the West End almost sold out in the first week. He now exhibits in galleries throughout Scotland and has his work in private collections in the USA, Canada, Germany, Portugal and Japan as well as in the U.K.
